Default Do I need computer programming first, or...?

This is the story.

I have just put my '86 back together with new AFR heads and a pretty big cam. With these mods I can't get it to idle with base timing anywhere near 6 degrees BTDC, so I put my car in the shop yesterday to see if they could get the timing set. My mechanic called later and said that if I was going to replace the computer that I should do it before they try to set the timing. I figured it wouldn't matter since base timing is stil the base timing right?

Should I tune the timing and set mimum air after I get a chip or before? What should I do?

Just to check-you were disconnecting the est wire before trying to set the base timing??? Also with your mods I think you'll find it difficult to get any mail order chip to dial it in. Sounds like it's time to learn to burn your own. It's really not that hard, and there's plenty of folk here to help.
