I'm an amateur mechanic with no experienced mechanic friends. I need a few things done and would appreciate if anyone has input and knows where to find the best prices:
1.) A/C recharge (I have a '93, so is it R-12 or R-134a?)
2.) My antenna doesn't retract all the way, but it does go all the way up. Do I need a mast or the drive assembly? Best place to find one cheap is...?
3.) After a hot start, I hear a horrendous noise for about 2 minutes. It stops all of a sudden. I think it's my smog pump with a pitted bearing. Do you agree? If so, where is the best spot to find one of these.
Ref: your item #2 Antennae won't go all the way down.
Mine did that too. Run the mast all the way up, then from the top drip a few drops of lite oil, like 3inone oil, down the mast and rub it up and down all the way. Then, turn off the radio and see if the mast will then go all the way down. Do that 2-3 times. My manual states that the mast will eventually get too dry, therefore the need for an occassionally oiling.
Good luck, :yesnod:
I've tried 3-in-1 and a silicone lube. Neither helped. I used WD40, and an engineer friend at work said that's a big no-no. Don't know if he's right or not.
Ditto on not using WD40, I wouldn't either on the mast. I'd keep trying to lub it before I'd try to replace it. Never done that, but I think it would be a real bugger!!! :nonod:
#1--- yours is 134a, and shouldn't cost too much for the refrigerant, and you can do it yourself with a little reading...its not hard at all...and you can buy 134a in stores for approx.$4 a can....
#2--- My mast had the same problem, go to the dealer and get the mast replacement, it comes with directions, and I also used the tech tip section here on the forum, it has a real good step-by-step proceedure..it took me approx. 3 hours... could take less... it cost about $20.00
#3, don't know too much about the bearings, but if you do need a new one, try http://www.gmpartsdirect.com I found this site the other day, and have a list of parts I'm about to buy, the prices are EXCELLENT! all you need is the part number, it should be on your old pump somewhere.. good luck...

Just make sure you do this in the garage with the door closed...
...your neighbors see you doing this, they're gonna get the WRONG IDEA!
If you have a 93 its R12 they didn't put in 134 until 94 , its easy to check, if it has schrader vavles like a tire its R12. if it has bigger snap on fittings its 134. May have been converted, As far as the antenna, I tried lubricating, new ribbon, Finally went with a new one ,if I had to do over I would just install a new one. Good luck Jim
The Antenna problem is a real clasic. I'm having the same problem.
1) The 93's came stock with R12. I'd consider converting to R134. I did and I'm pleased with the results. I did replace the evaporator and had the entire system vacumed.
2) I'd replace the enitre unit.
