Say I wanted to convert my A/C system to over to R-134a, what would be involved and what is the cost involved. An R-12 system WILL work with R-134 but not as well, and there are some life expectancy issuses.
I assume I would need a new compressor, $ ?
What else?
Nathan: if you do a search on aircond, I think you will find info on the change over, also Ackits.com has a section on conversions as well as a forum for ac questions.. No you don't need a new compressor, just a flush and new orfice,accumlator,and fittings ,good luck Jim
Just did mine this week out of necessity...the old compressor seezed. If your compressor is OK you will need the following:
#1 A new accumulator/dryer (thats the big silver can between the engine and the radiator;
#2 For a couple of bucks yo should replace the Oriface screen (slips in the line from the condensor to the evaporator near the fire wall);
#3 Replace all the "O-rings" where you open the system;
#4 Whoever recharges the system must first flush it out...the R-12 oil and refrig. are not compatable with the 134.
That's it...took me about 25 minutes to swap everything including the compressor.
I was wondering about this myself... My compressor has done the "I don't feel like turning anymore" dance too. I am going to replace it and convert to R134... PTz, where did you source your compressor and did it come R134 ready?
