Default rear end questions

I've been working on the rear suspension on my 86, replacing the u-joints and hubs. When I took the halfshafts out, I marked which side they go on. When I bolted one on the drivers side I realized I put it on the wrong side. Does it really make a difference which side they go on? I read in another thread that it would be a good idea to replace some washers when replacing the hubs, but I didn't fully understand where they go.

Halfshafts can be swapped left to right and flipped around without worry. Lot of guys install the teflon washers during a hub replacement. I never used one and never had a problem. Someone else will chime in.

The washer goes between the hub and the stub axle. It is thin, teflon coated, and only available from a dealer. Good idea to replace it while you are in there as they are relatively cheap and it would be a shame to have to tear everything back apart soon.

Thanks 383vett. My manual said to mark them in every way possible and be sure to install them in the same way, but I didn't see the point.
Aminnich, I see what you are talking about. Interesting that someone has replaced the passenger side bearing before but didn't reinstall a washer.
