I'm about to pull the trigger on a Petris Opti. Is it still a good one?

Why is the thread mentioned above closed? And where is the thread in the link in the last post in that thread about the so called bad experience with Petri? Doing my homework on a new opti (after 3 failed) and I would really like to read that thread!

Is Petris still using the same OEM cores, with genuine mitsubishi optispark, as he was?

Web site suggests "Mitsubishi grade", not Mitsubishi specific:

Since this thread is alive go look at my pics. I had to go to the TN Attorney General's office and scavenge a used Opti off Craigslist for free to get satisfaction.

Saw your photos, and read your thread with great interest.
Unfortunately, we were never privileged to read the outcome.
I never understood why there was ever any controversy. The photos and text all supported your case.

He refused to make it right. I actually picked up the used opti before he sent me #2, they delayed me 2 weeks while my car was disassembled in the driveway. I asked for a refund and he refused. Instead he sent me junk #2. After it proved defective I filed a claim with my credit card company. He attempted to turn me over to collections and they dinged my credit report for nearly $700! I was able to get this removed but I still had the hassle of fighting them too.

They kept offering ridiculous settlements like 12 gallons of antifreeze and 3 sets of waterpump gaskets. While it is true I went through this quantity of antifreeze and gaskets I did not need more since my car was together and running.

After I involved the TN Attorney General's office they got a little more realistic.
In the end I kept the cap and venting system and sent them the 2 junk optis back.

That's really hard to believe about Petris. I can only say that for over 2 Years, mine has done great with no problems!

Believe it! They even posted in my thread until the pictures were added, they never posted again after the world saw pics of their products. Look it up.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/tran...i-install.html

Notice that both Chris Petris and his daughter jumped into this thread but quickly left after I posted pics, never to return.

They also did away with their lifetime warranty. I have screenshots of the warranty page on their website before they deleted it for anyone who needs to enforce the lifetime warranty they once offered.

uggggg...I'm pulling my hair out here. I am so sick of dealing with this POS! Doing the LTCC coil conversion for sure. I just with I know who if anyone actually used the Mitsubishi sensor it still even exists. Anyone know if the stock Mitsubishi sensor would bolt into a MSD case? I have a brand new MSD that failed with under 300 miles on it and I have my original opti with 30K on it that failed. I am pretty sure the sensor in the stock unit is still good, but I don't think it's going to look too pretty once I open it up. I am pretty sure it got wet last year and that's why it failed this year...

Im sorry, but I have to laugh at the coil conversions. Why not do an LSx swap if you have to go thru the trouble.

The funny thing about LT1 coil conversions is they still dont eliminate the optispark!

They still rely on the optical sensor - which is the most failure prone part of the whole system.

The optispark works fine as long as you add a custom vent to a 92-94 non-vented unit. My original (non-vented)optispark failed at 26k miles on my 93 due to water intrusion.

Again, add a vent and suddenly the 92-94 becomes as reliable as a 95-96 which are known to go over 200k in abusive taxi-cab, picku trucks, police-car, etc, environments for those motors

I believe bassackwards bought my optispark which was a converted 92-94 to vented style. It worked fine for me and it works fine for him as a used part.

The problem is people using non-OE grade optisparks. MSD, dynaspark, they are all PO$.

Spend the money. You can buy a 92-94 AC Delco optispark for about $700 from advance auto parts (well that was back in nov 2011 last time I checked).

The 95-96 are a little tougher to come by. They were available as Delphi (can someone confirm this is who made the OE part?, also need someone to confirm that current Delphi has the mitsubishi optical sensor ) units.

There are also AC Delco 'rest-assured' remanufactured units.

Now beware I did have a problem with a remanufactued AC delco unit. As I mentioned in a previous post, every thing was new, except for the optical sensor. They had painted black spraypaint over the mitsubishi optical sensor and called it 'new'. Well, that part of it broke down on it and caused me to have to tear it down. gmpartsdirect.com were absolute cun!ts about it and refused to give me my money back just refer me to a gm dealer for another unit under warranty.

All that said about the acdelco remanufactured units....they would still be one of my top choices (along with Delphi) if I needed to buy a replacement for a 95-96 car.

no need to be sorry lol I've always been led to believe that the Mitsubishi optical sensor is pretty bulletproof and the high-voltage section of the Opti is what fails. Most of the guys I've talked to that seem to know about these things tell me that it's the high voltage portion and the gases that build up from that high voltage along with the moisture that causes the distributor section to fail. Perfect case in point is my stock unit the sensor is fine its the distributor portion that has failed. Both msd units that I had fail....same thing. The optic still works but the distributor section is what failed.

I'd take your used OEM, clean it up good, put a vented cap on it and use it. The optical sensor rarely fails. It is the cap or the bearing on oem units.

well it had a vented cap because its a 95 but still got wet. I think it was sucking moisture up through the intake on the Power Tour last year. We hit monsoon rains and I have a small pro charger on the car and the snorkel is in front of the right front wheel down low. Rain water from the front seam of the hood drips right on the filter in heavy rain so I need to move that and I need to get a sock for the K&N to help avoid moisture. Does anyone know if I have to vent that through the intake or can I vent it some other way?

well the two MSD's one was arching all over the place right from the get go the second one just flat-out died on me putting in traffic and then the car was extremely hard starting with all kinds of Code relating to hi and low pulse. Put the OEM back on and that one ran fine till It got wet. the car was misfiring and couldn't take any type of load. Once it dried out it would run fine again. Then this year it flat-out died and wouldn't even pop. The car is apart right now at my buddies. When we tested it it looks like its pulsing or grounding the injectors when you crank the car over so we think the sensor is fine. There is no spark.
