Default A question about a c4 replacement battery

My 94 battery finally gave out. The owner's manual calls for a 75B-72 for my 350/300 HP engine.
The Chilton repair manual states: "The slow increase in electrical resistance over time makes it prudent to install a new battery with a greater capacity than the old."
My question is just how much "greater capacity" and is it possible to install a TOO MUCH GREATER CAPACITY that would damage the starter or other electronic components?????

The short answer is "No".

Price is the governing factor.

Some folks buy an inexpensive battery and are prepared to replace the battery every one or two years.

Others buy a premium battery and are "good to go" for several years.

Interstate Batteries has many places to warranty the battery. Almost every repair shop in the US carries Interstate.

The auto parts stores (Advance, Autozone, Pep Boys, O'Reillys etc.) also have good coverage as far as the warranty.

The length of warranty (2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years, 6 years) determines the amount of electrical power and the price.

Hope this helps you in your search!

My two cents- get the highest capacity Interstate that fits in the car. I have used these in several vehicles over many years and they regularly outlive their warranties by a considerable margin.

NAPA's house brand is made by Deka, very good reviews on some of the other forums I visit. I've got 2 of them in my truck.

My experience with two different NAPA batteries was they both failed at about half or two-thirds the expected life and they offered to prorate and replace them, but the $$ worked out in their favor, not mine. I went elsewhere.

OK- so are all batteries by Johnson Controls equal? Or are some more equal than others, and made to sell at a particular price point?

The factory battery is a specific Group size (Group 75). The -72 you show is usually a designation for the total number of months of the warranty. In this case it's 6 years. There are a wide variety of batteries in a given group size with different ratings for cranking amps. Batteries with a higher CCA number are better for cold climates or cars that may be started frequently.

Unless you have a lot of extra electronic equipment over what was installed by the factory (audio system for example) a battery that meets the factory CCA numbers will work fine. Of course you can also get a Group 75 battery with the highest CCA you can find and it will work too.

I would question the Chilton's manual for anything especially if it's one of those $15 rags you find on a magazine rack at a chain auto supply place. No better than a Haynes manual.

Nothing at all wrong with an Interstate battery. Good warranty service if needed and they will last a long time.

Prior to about a year ago, NAPA batteries were made by Exide, IIRC. The Deka batteries haven't been sold for all that long.

I have napa in the car now. The napa I have is side vented...meaning the fumes emitted will eat at the wiring harnass next to the battery. I have a 96. In the process of getting a true sealed battery like interstate or at the very least a battery housing.
