Default Early C4 radiator and intake

Caleb asked me a question earlier today on how I was able to set up a cold air intake using the stock upright 84 radiator. I know this will not apply to most c4 owners out there, but I toyed with the idea of changing over to a later radiator and shroud set up but decided for my needs to take out the die grinder and go at it. The 84 hood has a double layer of fiberglass in the center which might not allow enough clearance to fit a later model air bridge between the hood and radiator. I decided to I cut away using a sawzall and die grinder. I cut out the center area of the hood above the radiator and reinforced the area using a steel plate and bolts. I then fit a Ron Davis radiator and fabricated a shroud using aluminum sheeting and a cold air intake using a C5 K&N air bridge and an open element, oval, K&N filter in front of the radiator. Hope this helps someone. Willie

Wow Willie thanks a bunch for posting up those pics!! I'm talking back and forth with a guy parting out a c4 right now about getting the later gen stuff but if that doesnt work I've got my plan b!

So it looks like you completely removed the upper ratiator shroud and are just using the lower? What are using to suprt the radiator? On mine (89) the radiator is held in place by the rubber pieces on top and bottom.

It looks to me like the shroud on your car is a little different than mine. But still this gives me some good ideas! Thanks again!

looks like a nice long cowl induction hood scoop would make that doable with the stock shroud

Nice work Willie. Handy with the scapel I see....

Caleb get er up and running and see whats up. I personally dont think you need to go to the other rad setup, but its up to you man. You may be making more work for yourself. I think my setup will be fine for the 421. Time will tell!

Thanks guys. I did this whole project because I wanted to add a cold air intake directly to the throttle body. The 84 hood didn't allow that. Even with the increased clearance of a later setup, the double layer of the hood wouldn't allow for a late stock airbridge to clear. I made a plate that is bolted to the sides of the lower shroud to stabilize the radiator. The sides of the plate envelope the radiator tanks and hold it in position. The bottom of the tanks had tabs that are bolted to the shroud from below to keep the radiator from moving vertically. You're right Alaska, a hood scoop would have been the simple answer, but I didn't want to involve paint etc. Willie
