Default Chasing leaks

I think I have all my oil leaks Fixed but for one.

After reading other Thread about main seals leak and Dont use Fel-Pro Main seals for rear main seal form Pete K.

And yes thats what I used when building the motor he said use just about any other brand But Fel-Pro he has a track record of them failing on him.

My Quesition Is I picked up a SKF brand rear main seal from Napa is this Brand seal a good one before I pull the trans and install it just to find out I should not use this brand either.

From what I understand, SKF is a good seal. Heavy duty and made to last. Let others chime in though before you slap it back together.

Hmmm it is an easy job on an 85 vette as they have the two piece rear main seals, just remove the starter drop the pan and remove the oil pump and the rear bearing cap. Use the new seal to push the old one out and and fit the new seal in the bearing cap, use a bit of silicone at the ends of the seals and reassemble. Depending on the year of your vette they changed to the one piece design mid way thru 86 i believe?
Its a bitch to have to remove the transmission and flywheel in order to change the rear main seal
Just have plenty of refreshments ready for the job

Put car up on Jack stands today pulled the TC dust cover off expecting to see the Flex plate and the TC to be cover with Oil it was nice and dry.

So it is not the rear main seal after all I pulled the Oil pan and yep I found the leak it was on the seal rail where the Oil dip stick come though you could not real see it before the starter and the headers made it very hard to see.

I happen to have a spare 1 Piece oil pan gaslket from when I built the motor, this time not trusting the instruction for the Oil pan gasket I using RTV this time around not just in the cornners.

The good thing I dont have to pull the trans out Again Thank You.

If you haven't already installed the gasket and pan, I HIGHLY recommend using "The Right Stuff" versus typical RTV.

3x the price of RTV and worth every penny. More resistant to gas and oil, sets up quickly, etc.

I looked at the right stuff the reason I did not use it it has a 1 minute working time I not that fast the motor is still in the car.

And I just got done puting the pan back on.

FWIW. it starts to set, but you actually get ~15 minutes of time to work with it. I did my Canton RR oil pan with the engine in the car. Leak free
