Default 4+3 Whine

Well I got the Clutch hydrolics all fixed now its time to try to fix the tranny issue.. There is a very loud whine when you are in the manual drive mode but as soon as you go into OD the Whine goes away. The Whine is always there from the time you leave in 1st gear untill you activate the OD unit. The whine is a constant. Does not matter if you are accellerating, slowing down, shifting or just having the tranny in neutral while slowing down to a stop. The Whine is there when the Clutch pedal is pushed in as well. If the car is moving and its not in OD there is a whine basically.. I changed out the fluid today and there was some metal on the magnet drainplug. I used 80W90 gear oil.. I am thinking its a bearing issue inside the MT. The car is a 86 with 71,600 miles on it..

It sounds like it's the front annular carrier bearing in the OD unit? The carrier has the pinion gears that produces OD. Just a thought.

Cool.. You guys rock.. Is this bearing something that I can replace by myself or does it need to be done by a transmission rebuilder??

Some more bedtime reading from 1998.

Suggest you make notes or cut and paste for reference as no idea why this archive is still available;
it is not accessible from the 5speed website

As noted elsewhere 5speeds sold their 4+3 parts /service to SK Speed

Read this and see if you are up for it

I would talk to Brian at SK Speed for parts, from the link I posted it appears the bearing is not a reg off the shelf one.
