I know that whinning gears is a sign of a problem ... so i'm trying to figure out if it's my gears making the noise. I don't hear anything unless i'm going 50+ .. the whine occurs mostly when i let off the gas around 60mph .. and it also happens sometimes when accelerating a little strong.
I think my car has made this noise since I bought it, and I always thought it was the tranny (sounds like it's coming from the rear of the tranny). But since it was just rebuilt and it still makes the noise.. i think my luck is kicking back in.
Sound like it's wearing out? Start saving up for the "gears" fund?
Make sure that the detent cable for the transmission is set correctly. I played around with that setting one time and my transmission started to whine a little. After I reset it back to stock it stopped.
I've heard the type of gear whine you are experiencing on several Dana 36 and 44 rears. If it is not exceptional, I would consider it normal.
In most cases, this type of whine doesn't manifest itself until the gear oil gets warm. Try to notice if the whine is not there when you first start driving the vehicle from a cold start. If it isn't, my opinion is it is normal.
I know if the mixture is not correct with posi and gear oil you can get a noise. Some go with synthetic oil since it run much cooler/ redline make a pre mix that work well. I just did the normal Mobil and posi with mine. But I had someone do it. These are things that I have heard so that is my 2 cents
My neighbor is retired from DANA-just this year.He said if it whines then
quite possibly the gear set is set up improperly. That is a big complaint
when they would send them out. If it whined on the coast side of the gear
set,it was sent back to to determine exactly why. The ring and pinion were
always MATCHED and color coded w/ paint. Different colors meant
different SETTINGS. Even the snap rings for the halfshafts are this way.
I pulled my yokes out for new seals, and he said And I quote(Make sure
those snap rings go back in EXACTLY where they came from)
He even showed me on the case, who set up my rear-which shiftdid it-(1st)
The guys initials-(a buddy of his)which day of the year it was made (365)last day-. This weant on for about an hour and then we checked my backlash!
I was like DAMN dude!! The guy knew some poopie!!
Shoe me all kinds of pics of what a good and bad gear should look like, inside the case. Anyways ,gear whine is BAD. I will talk to him some more and see
what he says. Not being mean, but he was very adameant about all this
so i am driving home the point he got across to me.

and finally what the ring and pinion was set at(0).

Hey, thanks! Good to know someone who works for the company that builds the rear ends!
Yes, I'm sure it's not a good sign, but it's probably not because it was setup wrong. I'll bet it's just old age and fluid that needs to be changed in mine. It's on my to-do list for my car (which is a never ending list i might add)
