Default Another cam thread. Need some suggestions.

Okay, okay, I understand that there are quite a bit of threads on here in regards to cam swaps and the whole bit. I looked through them and still need some advice. I have a '94 with the LT1, which is still all stock. Does anyone recommend a good cam that will work with the stock heads. Now I know a fair amount of people will tell me to go with the HotCam, but I want to know what else is available for my needs. I'm only an 18 year old college student so I don't have a whole hell of a lot of money and figured that a cam would be a good place to start. **Also would be swapping the springs and installing 1.6rr**

What I'm looking for:
-Decent increase in power
-Still use the stock heads(obviously)
-Choppy idle(nothing radical but you can tell it's cammed)
-Good street manners

If you are changing nothing but the cam, (a mistake in my opinion) first get something with a little more lift. I would think an LSA of 110. As you heads are your limiting factor, you need more lift for starters.

The cam you are looking for.. will need a tune.. matching Springs.. Depending on mileage
More parts and evailuation
Just install 1.6 rockers.. you still need to check the springs... And some exhaust work If needed ??
untill you have a goal and money

Well I was also going to do 1.6rr and swap out the springs.

The problem you're going to run into is allowing the air in and out of the engine. Without supporting mods, your cam isn't going to give you a whole heck of a lot. You may be disappointed. Honestly, I would work on the volumetric efficiency of the engine before you work on internals.

So my best bet would be to put it on hold and go for a set of longtubes.

Thanks a lot guys. I don't mean to sound dumb or anything. I'm still a bit new to this and I'm still learning, trying to learn as much as possible. Does anyone have any particular brand of header I should go with?

I believe your Vette is speed density.Your Vette will give you fits with a bigger cam without a tune.I would go with 1.6 roller rockers and headers. That should give you a noticeable improvement.

^^^ His 94 is not speed density, it's MAF.

Personally I really don't feel that headers are a great upgrade for a stock LT1, the stock exhaust flows pretty well.

If you are wanting to do just a cam, look into the Hot cam kit. It comes with GM's Hot cam, springs, and 1.6 roller rockers. If will give you a nice boost in performance and has a little chop at idle.

Thanks admiral, I'll look into them! And I agree, you look at the price tag of some of them and you're like

Thanks a lot. Quick question though, any tuning or anything else that I should know about with the Hot Cam setup. Or is it just a straight forward install and no worries about anything else? Thanks again.

A tune will help get the most performance an driveability out of any camshaft install. With a simple Hot cam upgrade in an M6, a mail order tune would work.

I would definitely get a tune with a cam. Your car may not like it otherwise and have some odd behavior.

I really think you should focus on intake, exhaust and heads before you worry about a cam.

Question for you now, is just a K&N filter and open lid mod sufficient enough since I was reading through older threads and heard that the SLP Claw and BBP Vortex intake are a bit of a waste. Should I also do anything like a larger throttle body? I hate to keep bombarding everyone with questions, but I want to make sure that I do things right plus I just want to learn as much as possible which is why I asked him about the Hot Cam; for my own edification as well as for future reference

Yes, the K&N will work fine. Don't waste your money on fancy air intakes. Also, a larger TB won't be needed.

Thanks a bunch. I heard that the K&N is the best since you save quite a bit of money since the others aren't all they're cracked up to be. Just wanted to double check though.

Big thank you to everyone for your help and for answering all of my questions. I really appreciate it

The LT1 have good intakes that flow welll and 2-3/4" exhaust that also flow well. I think the cam swap, should yield a larger HP gain. headers will help, but not as much as most people think. The reason being the engine is stock and GM did a good job in the combo setup. Gears will be a bigger improvement
