Default LT1 Ping

I have a 94 vette with the LT1 six speed. Last year I disconnected the battery and replaced the plugs and wires. Car ran great no more miss. I did notice a slight ping in six gear going up an overpass. The car starts right up idles fine has great power everything runs strong except for this ping and knock under a slight load. I took the car out last week and noticed that going up a hill I had to shift to fith so the car would not ping. Seems to be getting worse. So far I do not have any codes and the pining seems to be intermittant. Any ideas? I have about 100,000 miles and just replaced the water pump weep hole looked fine.

Is it possible that the plugs are the wrong heat range? If the problem began right after the work, 9 times out of 10, there is a connection.

What kind of gas are you running? Unless that's a really fast overpass you may be "lugging" your engine and although that's not usually a problem, with your mileage, possible carbon buildup, maybe it's time to blow her out a little.

6th gear really isn't meant to be used for anything under 70 mph Interstate cruising.

Even at speeds of 70mph and above, if you want to "floor it", you should downshift to the proper lower gear.

I run 91 octane gas. As the plugs go I used the same heat range and same type that was in there. I realize that running in six gear lugs the engine the point is that it didn't do this before. The last run I did, about 200 miles I drove it pretty hard trying to blow any crap out of it. No change. I think the knock sensors are working I can feel the engine miss a little when the knocking begins, like it is trying to retard the timing.

Update:

I checked the EGR valve and it was only operating half way. I replaced it and the pinging has stopped.
