Default Aluminum 350 blocks

Any impressions on the GM aluminum block. I know someone who wants to sell one and was wondering if the forum had some opinions on it.

I'm glad somebody asked, i was thinkin about this yesterday while lookin at my Scoggin-Dickey catalog. They had several AL blocks inside for SBC's. Could you use one instead of a ZZ4 block? advantages?

The C5 boyz would best be qualified to answer this...

They've had the alum block since 1997...

No hp performance advantage, save about 100 lbs is all. Rather expensive for 100 lbs of weight savings. Yeah I want one also. These things have been around for almost forever. The sprint car guys use them almost exclusively. If you go that route, may as well get the raised deck, siamesed bore block and go for some cubes [bigtime].

I thought the C5 was an entirely different animal than the 'old school' 350???

If this is the block you're talking about it is a very good start to building a great engine .....it was the one I was considering before getting involved in the LT5. You have a wide range of reasonable head setups off setting some of the price and certainly the weight savings is worth it and this block has lots of potential.

P/N 10185075
The aluminum V8 bare block weighs 90 lbs. and is cast from prime ingot A-356 aluminum with heat treatment to T6 specifications. Wall thicknesses have been increased for greater stress capabilities. The main bearing diameter is 2.45". Its rigid deck surfaces are .620". It has blind-tapped head bolt holes to improve head gasket sealing. The cylinder sleeves are semi-finished at 3.986" and will finish at 4.160" bore diameter. It has a 4-bolt main bearing cap on all five locations of 8620 steel which will clear standard oil pans. The rear main bearing is the 2-piece, pre-1986 design. These blocks are wet sump designed but can be converted to dry sump oiling by simply plugging the oil pump hole in its rear main bearing cap. Use cam bering kit P/N 12370843.

4.160" bore diameter? Must be to compensate for the expansion of the AL?

No... it's to compensate for the oversized pistons that you can stuff in there for bigger cubic inches. The bores have steel sleves and operate like any old small block.

 Nothing to do with expansion.....if it did the casting would be useless, the cylinder sleeves are iron and left to the engine builders spec. for honing etc.
