Heat from console area?
Definately very warm if I open ashtray cover or console lid. Is this normal or should I worry about a plugged cat? I've looked under the car and when I had the trans out, everything seemed normal. Thanks in advance.
I believe it is normal. Mine is the same way. That's probably why our CD players crap out on us. I think there are some heat barrier kits you can buy but I don't know how helpful they are.
I guess it's normal, everyone on here said that it was when I asked that question last week. It still seems odd. I had smoke to come through my cupholders one time it was so hot. Don't worry about it, you just can't keep your drinks cold for very long.
It's normal. Corvettes are infamous for warm consoles and warm footwells. Really look sometime at just where your transmission is relative to the interior of the car. That's where all the heat is coming from.
Its your transmission and the lack of heat shielding between you and the motor/tranny. My CD player is very hot after i get the vette to temps. Its a wonder the CD-Rs dont melt. It really only bothers me in summer because it just increases the temperature inside the car so much that you cant stand to be in w/o the top off.
Rob, it might not be normal. I'm going to guess that yours is a ZF 6 speed, yes? If so I will suggest that the lower shifter boot is either torn or is not properly in place. It is actually very difficult to get the lower boot properly installed, so much so that even most shops blow this on clutch jobs. after dealing with a mysterious amont of heat on mine, that I seemed to notice more AFTER I had a shop replace a clutch I started checking it out. The center console design was obviously never intended for the ZF 6 speed, or they goofed in engineering (now that's never happened before has it?). I ended up modifying my center console to allow easier access to the side of the lower shifter boot that is closest to the driver. Once this was done, and a new lower boot installed, the heat went away.
the heat comes from the cats- a nice benefit of removing them has been a much cooler passenger compartment- nice in the florida heat! Plus I notice a big decrease in underhood temps
I agree with the Green Rocket. It is not normal to have this heat. When I removed my console I found the rubber boot had become dislodged along the driver's side of the opening. This was the cause of my heat. There does not seem to be anything in the design to hold it there. Maybe they used glue at the factory? I taped it on from the inside of the car to help keep it in place. FrankLT4CE
My lower shifter boot has a hole in it and needs to be replaced. I believe the shop that replaced the clutch tore it when they did it. I agree that it's much hotter now than before. Driving down the road the cup holders feel like they have their own heater blowing on them! :mad

I believe the heat is normal, my boot is fine, on long trips, I'll feel the heat. Remember the exhaust runs under there also.
While it might not seem like there isn't anything really holding in the lower boot, the retainer is built into the design: there is a bead moulded into the lower boot that "pops" into a receiver groove on the center console shifter opening. Yes, the factory also additionally uses a gooey paste around the circumference of this opening to really make a seal. But unless you do anything to allow access to the side of the console nearest the driver, you will never get the boot to pop into the receiver groove. This is why I modified my console to allow the drivers side to be pulled away from the console while properly installing the boot. Your only other alternative involves removing the drivers console side panel, and to do that you need to remove the seat - this is why I made a few choice cuts in the panel under the console top that allow some movement in the panel without having to remove all the above mentioned parts.
I have found many other ZF 6 speed Corvettes to have a torn or improperly installed lower boot. Even more amazing to me is how many owners accept this as "just the way it is"! I would go so far as to say that probably at least half the people who have responded to this thread will find that their lower boot is torn or improperly installed. The cats will NOT heat the cupholder area to any great degree when the boot is properly installed. When your cats get hot or go overtemperature due to a rich fuel condition they will make the LOWER console side area nearest to your feet very warm, not the cupholder area. Don't get me wrong, the cupholder area will never be cool, but when it gets downright roasty you have a problem, not a normal condition.

Lmao you can begin to understand how I feel in bumper to bumper traffic in the afternoon under 110 degree weather with a black(already attracting the heat of the sun with color) very hot L98 in Arizona. And you know what...........not once did it occur to me why the hell my CD-Rs don't melt. I didn't even think about it. But now I'm startin to freak out. LOL I think running a car like this at cool temps under the hood is pretty much a necessity where I live. Now that I think about it........it seems like a friggin miracle why they DIDN'T melt.
I thought that it was an option back then. No really! it keeps the coffee to the right temp. I remember in my 86 sometimes I couldn't even touch the console.
I have always had heat there. Same deal, open the ashtray cover and heat comes out. I have eliminated the cats  to deal with this. Also I will try to shore up the lower boot too.
