Hello fellow C-4 enthusiast.. I need a real quick tip. I'm trying to remove the crank pulley and while I try to remove the bolts the pulley turns I did not want to keep going in fear of messing something up. Should I keep trying to turn it will it eventually stop to where I can crank down and remove the three bolts? Thanks in advance
No I think the entire crank pulley is turning, I'm replacing the optispark and well this is as far as I got. No where in the forums did anyone mention the pulley turning. I don't have a flywheel lock either.. damn.
Easiest way is an impact. If you dont have one, leave the belt on and hold with hand. By the way, there are four bolts to remove. The three around the pulley and one in the center that bolts into crank nose. Good luck.
Cool. I thought about putting the belt back on. So then it is not good idea to keep turning the pulley ? Just curious as to what could happend if I would of kept turning the crank pulley?
I really suggest you research this further. An LT uses a seperate pulley and crank hub system...it is NOT one piece like every other small block chevy ever made. The good news is that to replace the opti, you need only to remove the pulley which involves the outer three (3) bolts. You do not need to remove the center bolt...this bolt is only removed when the hub is removed..and the hub only needs to come off if you are planning to remove the timing chain cover (again taking the hub off is completely different than any other small block..do NOT attempt to remove it with a conventional puller in the USUAL way).
on my 96 I was able to immobilize the crank to allow removal of those outer three bolts by putting the transmission in 4th (or fifth or sixth) gear; and setting the parking brake; if you have an automatic, "park" should work as well. Leaving the serpentine belt on couldn't hurt either. The bolts shouldn't be that tight. sometimes, once the bolts are removed, some have found it necessary to "tap" the pulley to break it loose from any rust holding it to the hub.
good luck; doing this yourself is saving you HUNDREDS of $$$

An automatic in park will not hold the engine from turning. if it did you would not be able to start it up..sigh..

sorry; did I say park? now I remember why I stay away from cars with "voodoo" box transmissions
