going to look at another 84 today and it has the 4+3 trans. the sellers says that reverse only works when the engine is warm.. i know reverse is separate from the overdrive unit, so could this be possible? perhaps a misadjusted shift rod?
If reverse is gone (doesn't move at all), the chances are the OD unit has failed. Reverse is outside the 4-speed case and is part of the OD unit. When the carrier bearing goes bad, reverse goes away. Read this
I would expect that the seller either doesn't understand the 4+3 or he's hiding the failure of the OD unit.
The only time "temperature" comes into play is when the OD unit operates. Check this link for how the OD unit operates based on year of the car.

Your exactly correct. I just did this job, same symptoms. The front annular bearing goes out, tears up the carrier, excess clearence in the clutch pack .....the rear thrust bearing is also bad and possibly hanging up.. .
drove the car.. drove ok.. reverse engages for a second and then there is nothing... then its back..then nothing.
I would walk away from that car and keep looking. If you don't have the skills and equipment necessary to repair the OD, figure on something like $1200 for a reman OD unit along with the cost or the labor to remove the trans assembly, install the OD unit and replace the trans. That in itself could be another $500 to $750 depending on labor rates and extra parts.
There are complete trans available on that auction website. But it's much easier to find a car that has everything working.
i know an easy way tto test this, my buddy had a firebird way back when and one day he was in his backyard and got stuck. he couldnt put it in reverse so i just told him to put it in first and than i got my truck. I put a tire inbetween his car and my truck and i pushed him out. if the tires spin than the tranny is probably bad but if they dont than you should be alright, careful though as the tire fell off and i put a dent in his bumper
i can rebuild the o/d unit myself i have a lift and an array of tools as well as the FSM. guy is asking $2000 for the car. its a Z51 with the 4+3. i offered him $1000. he said he will think about it and let me know. if i can get the car cheap enough it will be a good investment.
