My 88 vette caught fire today. We got the fire put out (main damage is the at the firewall), but the engine wiring harness is trash. If I find a used engine wiring harness will that replace all of the wires from the firewall forward or do I need obtain a headlamp wiring harness as well. Thanks
I believe the headlight wiring goes through the connector behind the battery. It's called C100 on my '86.
The engine wiring goes through a firewall feedthrough behind the passenger side cylinder head. This is NOT a connector. It's basically a rectangular plastic frame filled with sticky sealant that is about 1" thick. I have heard that heat will soften the sealer. I found out after my own fire that WD-40 will dissolve it.
Here's a helpful hint: the engine "vacuum harness" that connects the fuel pressure regulator and the A.I.R. solenoids to the plenum is part number 14082463. It's about $10 to $15, which is a much better deal than buying all the pieces and making your own. I found the vacuum check valve at AutoZone for much less than the GM part.
After my fire the wiring was relatively undamaged. Many connectors were melted. I was able to buy the connector shells and swap in the pins from the old connectors. Right now the only missing connector shell is for the oil temperature sensor. The connector shell is completely gone and only the metal terminal remains so I have no idea what the orignal connector shell looked like.

They can rebuild any harness or sell you a re-man , or at least they did the last time I worked with them.
I agree, Jimsperformance can do the job... Painless also carrys stock harnesses and can do custom harnesses..Go to there site, click on Web catalog, then to classic cars....WW
excellent , replaced all of those connectors that fall apart when you remove them , they send pigtails already attached if you just want to splice or you can swap the pins.
Wow you guys are awesome thank you for all of the input. We are hoping to get some time this weekend to pull the engine and see the extent of the damage.
