I have attempted to replace the intake manifold gasket on my L-98 car and am having a problem with installing the new one. The gasket is the paper/metal sides and rubber for the ends. I followed the instructions that came with the gasket that said to put a bead of gasket sealer across the edges of the block before installing. I did this, pieced everything together, and set the intake on. Now the problem the gasket sealer is acting like grease and when I torqued the bolts down it squeezed the rubber end gaskets out:mad . Anyone have any advice from experience that may help me out? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I swear I'm the only person on earth that's had good luck with the rubber gaskets on the china walls. The ones that came with my old fel-pro kit had tabs to keep them in place and I've never had a leak. Unfortunately, the Fel Pro 1204s only came with cork. Go figure. :mad
Just run a thick bead of RTV instead of the front and back seals. Clean the surfaces with brake cleaner or something similar so that the silcone sticks.
If you get the FelPro intake gasket set, P/N 93318, it comes with the gaskets needed and a tube of black RTV for the two block end lands.
The instructions say to put a 3/16" bead along the lands and some up onto each gasket. Then proceed immediately to lay the base on as the RTV sets up (skins over) in about 10-15 minutes.
Thanks for all the advice guys. To be honest with you I was suprised to get the rubber pieces with the rest of the gasket. I just thought everybody used RTV for the ends. I just wanted some reasurance that I was thinking the right idea. I know on "Horse Power TV" that they only use RTV. :yesnod:
TV wouldn't lie......... I used the O2 sensor safe blue stuff. Also a forummember advised to use a punch and make a dimple every inch or so on the china wall and the ends of my new Accel SuperRam Base. Yes some of the goo oozed out, when tightening. I threw away the cork end peices as advised by the forum. you guys are great!!!
My fel pro set came with a tube of black RTV also.
One thing I was told was to set the manifold down exactly where it is going to stay. If you move it around to line up the bolts it will not seal.
