i was driving yesterday and my tach gauge light started fading, but comes back at times. all other parts of gauge are lit up fine. would this be a short in the wireing or could the cluster be dying?
The cluster isn't as complex as some make it out to be. Could simply be a loose wire...check the one on the distributor because it could be the source.
If it is a loose wire behind the cluster then you will have to take it out to see if there are bad connections and fix them.

The bulbs are plugged into the sockets that twist into a circuit board. On those sockets, you'll find two small mildly springy tabs. Those tabs put pressure on the eched (solder) trails of the circuit board. That's how they get there power supply.
Over time, the solder oxidizes. A casualty will be the dash light connections to the circuit board.
Good news it's eash to fix after pulling the cluster. Bads news, that's kindof PITA.
When you get it out, clean off the oxidation, rotate the sockets in/out of their holes a time/two. That will restore proper connection and cure your problem.
