Code 33 - ahhh! Help!
It was raining/pouring like mad yesterday here in NJ, my '86 started fine but after a couple miles, the service light came on. The car ran like it's going to die, I shut the engine off and check the codes: 33 - MAF burnoff energy greater than 5volts. But I changed BOTH the MAF power and burnoff relays on Saturday with new A/C Delco units!!! I pulled into a parking garage and opened up the hood, seemed like there's water near the power junction behind the battery, and also near the relays... hmmm. When my '86 went kaput last time it was raining like mad too... Could this be a water seepage problem? I thought these connections are weather proof. Help me out fellas... thanks.
Yea, the weater has sucked here in SE NY for copla days too.
Anyway, they're supposed to be weather proof....
Notice a long finger-shaped rubber object hanging down from under the left vent area, just to the right of and behind the battery. This is a drain for the vents and may be either leaking or missing. Either situations would allow water to flow down into that relay area.
If that drain tube is cracked or missisng just run some vacuum tubing down behind the battery, below those relays to avoid the situation in the future.
Also check the weather stripping along the rear of the hood and in front of the doors.
