Hi all,
I've been unable to turn on the passive keyless entry sys on my
96. I think the remote battery is ok because I can work the hatch and
unlock the passenger door.
The manual says to 'take key out of ignition and hold door key for
two seconds' to arm/disarn system. Doesn't seem to do it for me.
I don't see the pke light come on on the driver info center when I start up.
thanks
Ken
PS why does the door button only unlock the passenger door and not the
driver? I got the impression it was supposed to be this way from the manual.
I can hear a motor/solenoid in the driver door when I press door button,
but it doesn't unlock.
I just went thru the same problem 3 weeks ago when I bought my 96!!!! Here's what you do. Lock the car using the button inside the car. Stand outside the car next to the drivers door. Hold down the door button on the remote until the car unlocks or beeps. It will now be activated. When the car is unlocked, simply walk 5 feet away from the car and both doors willlock and the horn will sound. get within 5 feet of the car with your remote and the car will unlock. The reason the pass door and hatch button work now is because you are in manual mode. You may want to go to Ebay.com and buy an owners manual for future referance. Hope this helps!!!! Good luck with the car!!! :yesnod:
Geez, I would've figured your '96 was more "up to date" than my '93, but it sounds like they're the same.
Anyway, to get the activation to work while you're holding that key down, hold it somewhere around the ignition slot (steering column). It doesn't seem to work unless it's right next to the dash.
On the unlocking feature... yup, it only works on the passenger door. *sigh*
Maybe you're not holding the button long enough. If you just push it and it unlocks the passenger door then it wasn't long enough. You have to "cycle" the locks. Hold it down long enough for the locks to "cycle" I do mine at the car wash with the door open and unlocked. Just hold the button down till the door locks then unlocks. Then check the dash with the key. You could possibly have a burnt out light so you might want to do it and walk away like stated above.
If you can get it to work, you can also set it to open just the drivers door, or both the drivers and passengers door. Same principle, but with the key in the ignition in the off position. It will cycle from one side, to both sides, and back.
Manual says to arm, insert key in ignition . (do not start) While key is in ignition hold door key until door locks cycle close open. System is now armed. If you walk away from your car it will arm (beep horn once). Walk up to it it will unlock. To disarm hold remote close to steering column and press door on your remote. Doors will cycle close open. System is disarmed.
my problem was I wasn't holding the button down long enough.
Boy, without PKE turned on, the system just dares you to lock your keys
in. I mean you shut down and lock the doors with button, and if you set your
keys down before getting out, bingo locked out. thats how it was in the
old days I guess.
If you leave your keys in the car and it locks, you can just rock your car back and forth a little bit to wake up the FOB. It will unlock your doors. This happens to me when I'm washing the car.

Hah! Don't count on it though. Some guys in a tire shop left my keys in the car, on the dash, and shut the door. *honk* Oh no. We rocked and rocked that car, enough to force the keys to slide off the dash onto the passenger floor. Still didn't unlock!!! I had to turn some slightly-heavier-than-coathanger-gauge steel into a long, curved strand so that I could feed it through the weatherstrip and trigger the unlock button. Once the door unlocked, I grabbed the keys and shut the alarm off.
I have a 93 vette with the PKE system. When I bought my car it did not have a remote so I ordered one. The old lock actuator did not work so I replaced it with a used one. Now when I attempt to lock my doors the drivers door locks for about thee seconds then unlocks on it own. I can lock the doors with the button in the door panel and it stays locked. How do I get the remote to work properly? I have tried the suggestions on locking with the inside door button then pushing and holding the remote till the door unlocks and it is still not working properly. I have to lock the door with the key and cannot use the remote for the drivers door. Any help will be gladly appreciated.

Sounds as though you do not understand how the PKE works which is very common for new users, it is unlike most other systems. See this link for tips on operation.

Read the owners manual. You do not lock or unlock the doors (exception is unlocking pass. door) with the fob buttons. Just by walking away from and towards the car.

I would read the owners manual but I dont have one. Went to another web site and got detailed instructions on programming and gave it a try. Man did I feel good when I walked away from the vette the first time and the doors both locked and the horn sounded.

The drivers door locks and unlocks by walking towards and away from the car. The button is not intended to do anything to the drivers door. Because you can choose to have both doors, or only the drivers door open when you approach the car (a "safety" issue I guess), you can use the button to unlock the pass. door instead of jumping in and leaning over.
