Default Volt meter reading 18.0

The voltage indicator on my 87 suddenly started reading high...17.0 to 18.0. I took the alternator off and had it checked. It was reading fine at 14 volts. I then put it back on the car and had it checked again. Still the dash gage was reading 17+ while the volt meter at the battery was reading 14 and 14.5 at the alternator. After driving for a while the gage finally dropped back down out of the red to about 16 or so, still too high.

What's up with that? Anyone ever experiance this before?

Your dash voltmeter is defective. Your voltmeter on the battery terminals confirms this. Also, there is a MOV (metallic oxide varistor) across the power supply on one cluster circuit board that would have gone up in smoke if you really had 18 volts on it.

What would need to be replaced to correct this problem? Please don't tell me the dash has to come out! :nonod:

I know you told me not to tell you this, but......the dash has to come out. Now the first time is a cussing bitch, but after you do it a couple of times you do it faster and your carpet is not tear stained.
