Default lt1 getting ?too? hot on winter night?

I drove my 95 6spd to class tonight, it was about 40 degrees out and an hour 10 min drive. There is traffic and a few lights but nothing crazy. (50 min drive without traffic <..to show how much traffic)

I noticed the last 30 min of the drive that my coolant temp around 210 but then it went up to 227 by the time I parked.

normal for a cold night?

I did replace my waterpump last summer.

Thanks in advance!

Your cooling fan doesn't come on until around that temp, so sitting in traffic or at a light 227* would be normal. You really don't need to worry about overheating until it gets over 240*.

'95 6spd here as well. Mine does exactly the same thing. When I'm done with mods this sping I'm going to take it to get dyno'd and tuned. Will have the fan temp changed to 220 or lower. I can't see any reason for the temp needing to get to 235 before the friggin fan comes on.

It's an emissions thing. Apparently hot engines run more efficiently or some crap like that, at the expense of peak horsepower. Most people I know tend to think that peak horsepower is found in the 180-200 range.

My 95 six speed runs 190 to 205 regardless of the outside temp. On a hot (100 plus) day it will get to 215 in traffic. Has yours always run that hot, or is it something new? I would pay attention to it if has just started running higher than normal for your car.

I also have a 95, the temps you posted are too high, unless your sitting in traffic. Mine run at 185-190 on the highway with a 180 stat, but I could Easily see 210-220 while sitting in traffic. Have you checked the front side of the radiator for trash build up?

With ATC the radiator cooling fan(s) will not operate if the floor or vent mode has been selected until the engine reaches 228* which will occur quickly after a run on the highway.
