Default Corvette verses Standard 700r4

I understand that the Corvette 700r4 is about 5/8" shorter than the regular production 700r4's.Was wondering if it would be possible to swap the vette rear housing with a regular housing without changing out the rear output shaft.

you might measure how much drive shaft yoke shaft is showing on the vette trans. you may not need to. 5/8" isnt that much

Its the OD /tail housing thats the difference. Besides, the vette model has different servos in the valve body than the standard 700r.

You'll need to match that up exactly so the center beam bolts will match up.

What are you doing? Are you putting a Corvette tranny in a passanger car or vice versa? If you are putting a passanger car tranny in the Vette, wack 5/8" off the output shaft with a cutoff wheel (been there) and change the tailshaft. You should be good to go. You might want to install a shift kit to improve the shift quality. If you are putting a Vette tranny in a passanger car, just change the tailshaft. The 5/8" shouldn't make a difference since the yoke covers a good length of the output shaft.

That is exactly what i wanted to hear.I plan on putting the transmission in a 1966 Nova. There is 1" plus sticking out of the housing(Vette Housing). This will be going behind a 283 Cubic inch so not much Torque. Thanks for the info.

The big difference is the tailshaft housing on the Vette has the C beam bolt holes and there is no provision for a rear motor mount. You can swap tailshaft housings or fabricate a motor mount that fits the C beam holes.

Since you're going to need a custom driveshaft anyway, the output shaft length won't be a problem.

The actual difference between the 2 is about 1 inch so i will make up that difference when i do the measurements to cut the shaft.

Hi everyone !

If I undertand, I can bought a "standard" 700r4 tranny for my C4 1986 (if we apart servo etc...), only cut about 3/4" output shaft, change tail housing, and that's all ?
Speedo gears will be at the right emplacement ? Output grooves will have enough length to correctly accept drive shaft ?

Thanks
