Default Installing rockers, have question

I'm in the middle of installing Crane Gold 1.5 self aligning rr's.....and I have 2 questions. I got 2 types of nuts with the kit, the larger one obviously tightens the rocker to the stud, but there is also a smaller nut/fastener that fits down into the larger nut. The directions make no mention of this smaller piece. How far down into the larger nut should I screw the smaller one? Until it hits the stud? Also, after the install when I need to adjust the lash, would I do it tightening the smaller nut (it has an allen head) or the larger one?

Thanks,
Jason

Jason,

The inner allen screw is a locking screw.
Adjust your rockers using the big nut. After you have them adjusted, keep a wrench on it so it doesn't move and tighten down on the allen screw tightly.

Hope this helps,
Joe

They sound like Poly Locks; Mr G gave you the scoop.

Thanks. I've got em on now and am adjusting. At any point, should there be any side to side wiggle on the rockers (once tight)? What I've done is install the rockers, hand tighten all the nuts, then turned the crank 1/4 turn, checked for any up and down looseness in the rockers, tightened till the looseness was gone, then hit another half turn, then repeated the procedure until no rockers were loose after 2 crank revs. Is this correct?

Thx,
Jason

Yes they will wiggle.

When you install the rocker, the lifter needs to be on the base circle of the cam to get it adjusted properly. In other words, no lift on the cam for that rocker while adjusting. Sounds like you are doing fine. You may want to run the engine for a while and come back and readjust them all. The lifters need to be loaded (pumped up) to get a good adjustment and if they have been sitting a while they may have unpumped some. Don't over adjust the first time around or you will bend pushrods. Been there myself.

No. that's not the way to adjust the lifter preload. I'll send you a file I prepared to tell you how to do it.
