I've had good luck with the Flow Kooler water pumps I don't remember the price but they were cheaper than the Edelbrocks. Phone 805-544-5615 or http://www.flowcooler.com
Bob,
I have an Eldebrock Water Pump in my '86.
P/N: ELD-8815 from Summit's catalog.
At the time I purchased mine, it's cost was $159.95.
Here is what I liked about these water pumps 4 years ago when I made the purchase:
Edelbrock "guaranteed a leak proof water pump, due to the extreme tolerances
under which they were built."
Edelbrock also claimed: "because of the extremely close tolerances...equal cooling would be experienced on both sides of the engine...thus producing more horsepower."
I believe them. My engine has run cooler ever since I installed this pump 4 years ago.
You know the old saying: "you get what you pay for"...well if you ask me, I sure as hell don't want to short change, an engine that I want to produce the most power I can expect from the modifications I've made.
Good Luck with your choice.
I recently put a Stewart in my 87 ($104 to my door) and at idle if I see the temp starting to climb, I switch the fan on and down it comes. I recommend going to their site and reading what they have to say about water pumps and cooling your engine. From the way my original GM pump acted, it was clear to me that it didn't pump enough volume at idle to keep the engine cool. The Stewart does.
I've got a Flow Kooler pump and car runs about 15 degrees cooler at all times. Oil temp is also 10 -15 degrees cooler.
Never have to worry with a/c on and idling in stopand go traffic anymore. :D
I just ordered a water pump for my 94 (LT1) and decided on the new GM/Delco water pump. I checked the Stewart site and found that they don't offer one for the LT1 yet, and I can't wait (summer is here!!!). I need to replace the intake manifold gasket, and thought, since I'm here... so it's new water pump, Opti-Spark, plug wires, plugs, belt, hoses, radiator. I have the timing chain set too, but will wait for that.
