Default 87 Transmission help needed!

A little history.

Stock 87 Vette, L98, 700R trans, Dana 36 rear with 3:07 gears.

My Dana 36 grenaded it's self after about 2500 passes down the drag strip.

The rebuild included a Dana 44 with 3:54 gears, and a 2500 stall B&M torque converter. Since we had the trans out of the car we replaced the filter, and the front seal.

Just finished up putting everything back together. During the first test drive, everything seemed to be working properly. Got the car up to about 30mph in drive, downshifted manually to 2nd, to 1st and stopped. Started in 1st and manually to 2nd, and then drive. Everything seem to be fine. Made another low speed pass so far so good. Third pass with the car in drive there was a bang that sounded like it came from the rear. After that the only gears I had was reverse and 1st. Will not work if the gear selector is in overdrive, drive, or 2nd. Only 1st and reverse.

Attempted to diagnose by referencing the service manual and the only thing that "seemed" to apply was a notation about the torque converter.
"stator roller clutch not holding" I have no idea what that means.

The ONLY thing that we did to the transmission was replace the filter and front seal and fill it with fresh fluid.

There are no leaks under the car.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks

I suspect bad TV cable adjustment. Can cause high pressures and create problems.

It's possible the trans was on its last legs anyway and just happened to fail now.

I think you will need to remove the transmission to fix this one. I think you will find this (burned steels and big chunks missing from the frictions):

That's one thought that I had. The trans has 158,000 miles on it! 60,000 was put on by me and most of those miles were to and from drag strips, road courses, and autocross events.

When I changed the filter there was a strip of metal at the back of the filter. I thought that it was there to hold the filter to the bottom of the pan. Could it be there to hold the filter OFF the bottom of the pan?

Thanks for the reply!

The filter is designed to sit on the bottom of the pan.
