Default emissions removal?

I have been considering removing the emissions parts on my 93 because next year it will be 20 years old and in Maryland I can tag it with historic tags.
My questions are:
1. Is this a smart idea
2. If so, is there a way to kill the check engine light
3. Has anyone here done this?
I do not plan on selling the car, so resale will not be a issue. Any thoughts?

As long as the components are working, there is no real need to remove the emissions equipment. Yes, it does help to keep the air clean, but you may find that you will create more problems by removal.

The ECM controls the emissions systems on the car and it depends on input from sensors to make the car run properly. Prime examples are the O2 sensors and the EGR system. Disconnecting or removing these pieces will set codes and could hurt gas mileage and things like driveability.

The AIR system isn't driven by the engine like the older L98 system. The air pump is electric and works only when the engine is not up to operating temp.

The factory catalytic converters actually flow very well even compared to aftermarket converters. You will find that most mufflers shops will refuse to remove the cats or maybe even install aftermarket cats if the OEM ones are working fine. A shop can be hit with a 5 figure fine if they get caught.

You can easily disable the check engine light by removing the bulb. But then you have no way of knowing if the ECM has detected some other problem.

So IMHO, the answer to your #1 question is NO

That is true. I think I will obey the law...... maybe.

If they work, leave it alone.
You will get NO performance gain my taking them off.
FYI, the much lauded 1970 LT1 with 370 Gross HP, makes little or no more HP than a 1993 LT1 with 300 net HP. The 93 is about 99% cleaner than the 1970 engine.

It is better to leave it all on and keep the engine running the way that engineers designed it to run. These are great cars and in my opinion should be kept up and maintained.

If you need more performance, buy a C6.
