Default '86 Vette Water Temp Question

I have noticed that while driving on the parkeways (55 - 70 mph) the water temp is around 165 - 170 (according to the dash display), and when I'm in stop and go it climbs up to 226 (then it looks as if the electric fan kicks in) and it drops the temp down to 200.

I always thought once the car was warmed up the water temp should always be the same not fluctuate this much.

Any advice, opinions would be appreciated.

This is normal. On my 85 the fan kicks on at 230 and off at 210. If the car isn't moving, the engine will heat up until the fan starts.

(not calling you stupid) Totally normal. If you do want the temp to stay lower and a bit more stable, you can have the PROM reprogramed to kick the fans on sooner. There are a few guys in the ECM section that may be able to help you with that. Sounds to me like you have a 160* in there.

Welcome to the forum, btw. :seeya

Your temps are normal. You should have a chip made to turn your fans on earlier. DONT buy a hypertech. If you dont have a 160, then put that in also.

Sounds normal to me also. Also as a good preventive measure, clean up the area between the radiators. Check the tech section, you'd be amazed on how much crap gets in there! Good luck!
