Default Intermittent hard shift 1st to 2nd

Under normal (easy) driving conditions the automatic on my 92 LT1 will shift through all the gears nice and smooth. If I hit it from a stop when getting onto the interstate, it will stay in 1st until I get to about 50 and then shift hard nto 2nd. After that it is very smooth into drive and overdrive.

Is there an adjustment that would smooth out the hard shift?

I do not know what a shift kit is or if it has one. This is my first vette and I bought it a couple of months ago.

If you don't know much about your Vette don't mess with TV cable adjustement. In a 700r4 A/T one of the most important setting is this cable on the TB,if it is too smooth your clutches start sliping becouse of the low internal pressure allowed by the TV valve, and it cause a premature failure of clutch pack(clucthes burnt)...there is a procedure to follow to have TV set to specs, this let tha cable pull the TV valve at WOT at max pressure, throttle at WOT =TV valve full open.Only max pressure push inside the pistons hard and don't let slip the clutches.

ergo...let it shift harsh...,may be your governor need to be ceck, governor is a centrifugal valve, located in the tail of transmission driver side inside an housing with a cap(no need to drop transmission from your car). This valve is inside a little shaft connected to the outputshaft by a plastic gear.Sometimes it becomes stucked and doesn't release pressure to upshift.

The weights act on this plunger, which opens and closes a passage in the valve body to control full throttle upshifts.

tunedport85inject,

Thank you for the reply and excellent photos.

There are 171k miles on the tranny. Could this part be worn to where it is needing replacement? What is the best way to test and clean/repair it?

WORKING UNDER A 1800 LBs CAR IS DANGEROUS,SAFETY FIRST! If you are confident, you have to put the car on jack stand, roll under the car and remove that simple cover prying with a big flat screw driver between the cover lip and trans case, some fluid will come out ,so have a pan handy near you.To remove the governor gently rotate 1/8 turn and pull out from his housing.Using a can of brake cleaner spray inside the bore through the holes where plunger is locate (on the governor),spray over governor's harms and weights.Coat with clean trans fluid (dexron 3) and put the governor inside the housing gently rotating until it catch the teeth, tap the cover again ,replenish with dexron and take the car for a test drive. If you aren't confident,it's a simple task for a shop.First have your fluid level cecked, refill if needed.

fluid level must be ceck with a warm fluid ,take your car and let it warm, when your engine is warm ceck trans fluid temperature if it is warm ,but not hot,go with trans selector from 1 to N,2 toN,D to N,OD to N,R to N,then put it in P,and ceck level on dipstick, add until you are on the good mark.

It gets up to almost 50 and really screams before it shifts. It sets you back in the seat and gets there really quick. I have not had a chance to check the tack. But, yes it does.

I have to go through an intersection with a stop light at the bottom of the on ramp to the interstate. To be able to blend into traffic you need to get up to 65 quickly. Bad design for slow cars as there have been a few accidents there.

It only does it on a WOT takeoff and when it does it is time to hold on.
