My SES light came on when I started my car this AM, actually after about 2-3 minutes of idle. I checked and cleared it. Air flow or Mass Air Flow problem came up on my scanner, I didn't have time to do anything else, and it didn't come on again.
Anybody know what this might indicate? My car is a late '86 with 103k miles no problems except an occasional EGR problem after 20 miles at 60mph.

Re: Code 36 (Barrier)
Code 36 is a failure in the MAF burn off operation, usually the MAF burn off relay is the problem. Most folks replace both the MAF burn-off relay and the MAF power relay at the same time. They are on the firewall right behind the battery.
I would use GM parts for this, and make sure they get it right for your year. I know there were a lot of posts about the proper relay for each one.
Burn off relay is the one closest to the "fender" or outside of car.
Power relay is the one closest to the engine or center of car.
Barrier, I had a similar code in my 86 a long time ago (I don't recall exactly, but I think it was a 36). According to the mechanic at the time, and according the Haynes manual I have, there are no code numbers greater than 5. For example, there are only 11-15, 21-25... 51-55. The mechanic concluded that the ECM had its brains scrambled if it was setting an invalid code. We replaced the ECM and it solved the problem. So, based on that experience, you might want to be suspicious of the ECM.
BTW, I had the same symptoms with the EGR system setting a code after driving on the freeway for a while... I replaced the EGR valve and it solved that problem. It took me about 4 hours (and I'm kind of slow and careful) and wasn't that difficult.
