Default Broken Shifter Repair?

1993 with 6 speed
Today the shifter basically came off in my hand with just the boot keeping it in place. Removing the boot etc. it looks like the tube of the upper portion of the shifter was welded to the machined lower portion and the weld broke.

I did not see replacement shifters on venders web sites.
Does the rest of the shifter pull out of the transmission to replace...?

Repalcement parts?

Any help is appreciated.

Never heard of a stock shifter breaking like that. Perhaps a prior owner did a homemade short shifter?

I think that is it but that one is in one piece. Mine came apart at the top of the slot for the reverse lock bar. On yours it looks like a ridge around it there, but I think that is the weld bead that broke on mine.
So on mine the pivot portion with slot is attached to the transmission and the upper part of the shifter has the reverse bar sticking off of the bottom and is out of the car.

It looks like I am not allowed to attach a picture.
Mine is ruby also.

Yes, the square plate pops off with a flat bladed screwdriver. Then there's a retention pin which is a bit tricky to remove, usually requires vise-grips type pliers. Then the **** unthreads easily.

Default Broken shifter

Does this imply that cutting off the top inch (or half inch) of the shifter would not work to make a 'short shifter?"
What is it that gets weakened?

Please ignore that hacksaw I'm holding behind my back.

Thanks!!

I sent my shifter to ZF Doc in Phoenix. He shortened it and cleaned it up. It is great with very short throws yet the lock-out reverse still works.
Know everything about ZF trans also.

I did the same. I've had the Hurst in other C4s I've owned, but the ZFDoc short shifter feels much better to me. I like the reverse lockout functionality.

Thank you for the help ...
I got the shift **** and lift ring off. What releases the leather boot ring? Does it just snap into a groove? I rather not break it.

I'm probably going to go with a short shifter from ZFDoc. He also said he has not seen a factory weld fail like that before. He said it is a 2-3 hour job to replace the shifter. What was your experience to replace it?

Not fun haha. I just swapped shifters in my car while I was replacing the transmission. I can't imagine doing it with the transmission in the car. It is possible, but I was having some issues with it on a bench. All the boots are held on with zip ties, so cut them and then remove the boots. One the bottom of the shifter assembly you are going to need to pull back the rubber boot so that you can take a metal clip off the shifting lever and then push a pin out that locks the shifter to the transmission. It will come out as an assembly from the top. It is a job that having a buddy would definitely make things easier.

I have been emailing Bill at ZFDoc - waiting for a shortened shifter but so far can't get the stock one out. He says to unbolt the whole housing etc from the transmission and pull it out and rebuild on the bench. I have it completely disconnected but do not see any way to pull it up through the hole in the floor.
Other places I have seen about changing the shifter look like they pull the shifter and linkage out and leave the main frame portion in the car.

Suggestions?
