Ever since I ran my '95 completely out of fuel it doesn't always fire on the first try. I am starting with the most simple things first, so I am going to change the fuel filter thinking maybe I sucked a bunch of crap off the bottom of the tank. Where is it?
Sorry for such a stupid question, but I just got the car and don't have a shop manual yet. I figured instead of spending half an hour crawling around on the floor looking I would just ask here.
It's on the passenger side frame rail right as the fuel lines turn up to go into the engine compartment. It's not hard to change, but be prepared to take a bath in fuel.
It is right by the Cat on the right side, disconect the inlet after you remove the fuel pump fuse and remove the gas cap, remove the bracket that holds it, remove the clamps on the lines in the moter compartment and pull it up through the top. Also after you pull the fuse crank it till it stalls out of gas.

Only removes the pressure.
Line is still full of fuel and it will siphon out continuously if tank level too high.
Best to change filter with as little fuel in tank as possible and front of car raised.
Alternative is to remove fuel filler cover and either disconnect or pinch the supply line there to prevent fuel flow
one thing nobody says here is to remember, DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY!
i changed the filter on my 96 LT1 and thought it was pretty easy. i did read some on-line instructions and it stated to pull the filter/full line assembly up through the engine compartment. well, there was no way in hell that was happening in my 96! i just removed the filter bracket, and disconnected the inlet side line from my filter, disconnected the fuel lines at the fuel rail, and dropped the filter and fuel line assembly down just enough to disconnect the downstream side of the filter. changed the filter and pushed the assembly back in place, and reconnected everything. to be honest, seemed like a, start to finish, 30 minute job.
yea, maybe it can be done for $20, but it really makes me nervous anytime anyone is under the hood of my car! even if it was an all day job, i'd rather do it myself.

Yes you are right about the battery. I had no problem at all pulling it up through the engine compartment. If I remember right getting a wrench on the outlet fitting was the reason I pulled it through maybe on a lift would be a different story.

No problem doing that in my 96 LT-4. The link I posted above was written based on my LT-4, so it's odd you had problem pulling the assembly up through the engine bay.

i am odd - if it doesn't happen in a few minutes, i move on to plan "B" . i know, i spent some time monkeying around trying to pull that assembly up through the engine bay. it just wasn't happening. maybe i had a "fat" filter -
