Default Fuel Pump Questions

Ok,

91 coupe zf6 98,000 miles. Fuel filter changed at 91,000.

So for the last week or so, my 91 has been acting a little strange. I have felt a few slight hiccups driving at highway speeds, like a hesitation for a second then all is well.

Some mornings the car runs rough, but I didnt suspect anything as it was really cold outside and clears up within ten seconds.

Yesterday I had to start the car 3 times until it stayed running. It would start for 2-3 seconds then die. On the 3rd time it caught and remained running, and all was well.

I know this isnt ideal, but I wait until the reserve light comes on before I fill up.

Does this sound like the beginning of the end for my fuel pump? I do not suspect it has been replaced.

I do have a fuel pressure guage at home but i have been really busy and have not had the time to check out the pressure.

Since I suspect the pump is original, and I will need a new one at some point, I bought a Racetronix (high volume) fuel pump to have when the current one goes, or when I confirm the old one is the culprit.

Thanks for any information.

Mike

I'd let the car sit overnight, hook up the gauge, and do one key on cycle. Read gauge, then repeat. Note readings, then leave it alone with pressure on the system and see if it bleeds off.

You may even want to tape the gauge to the windshield and drive the car under load and note pressure.

Yes, it is possible your fuel pump is the culprit.

It could be the fuel pump , but it could be as simple as the tank doesn't have enough gas in it.. On C4 Corvettes its well documented that the fuel gauge is not accurate and those with experience suggest not letting the tank get to low.. They even suggest if running something like autocross to make sure you have over a half tank of gas to stop from sucking air.. I suggest filling the tank up, then see if it happens while the tank is full.. If it still acts the same then I would suspect the fuel pump...WW

Ok,

Tested fuel pressure...30-35 at idle. Adjustment on FPR has not changed and is still locked down tightly. Old reading was 46-48 at idle. High RPMS it stutters hard now.

Fuel pump is out and waiting for the new one to come in. While I have the gas lid and such open, how do i get rid of the woosh when i remove the fuel cap? ALso, my rubber boot around the filler neck is all beat up...where can I get a replacement?

Thanks,

Mike

Remove tank vent line at charcoal canister under drv side head light and blow back to tank
If line is blocked , common for it to be in the rubber sections that join the steel vent line in the wheel well behind drv seat

Replace the wiring harness that goes from the fuel pump to the connector on the top of the tank ( part you remove to get pump out ) those go bad with age and fuel exposure. Hopefully the Racetronix "kit", came with that piece.

It does come with the in-tank wiring.

It should get shipped monday or tuesday...at least that gives me time for the filler boot to come in from zip.

I'll have to try clearing the charcoal canister line...hopefully that fixes the woosh. When you say wheel well behind the drivers seat, do you mean inside the car where the ABS motor is?

Thanks All.

In the wheel well where the wheel is.
In front of the tire where floor rises into the well there are several steel lines all together.
Vent line has a rubber hose that commonly gets blocked with rust flakes falling down from the steel line over the tank
