automatic trasmition hard shift
Having some issue with the atomatic trasmition on my 86.
when in parking. is very hard to shift to any other position . and when fanally put it in drive or revers thecar Clunk-hard and jumps foward. same goes if I put revers.
after the car is in gear. work ok
any idea why the hard shifting?????

Hard gear engage from park to D or OD it's normal on ours old vette.Inside TH 700r4 accumulator piston works as a shock absorber when full pressure it's allowed to D or OD or R,mine fresh rebuild 700r4 makes the same an hard bang and jump when i put it in D or OD...don't worry...

My 86' recently had the transmission rebuilt and it does the same thing but it shifts perfectly after that. If there is a fix to this i would love to know but it doesn't bother me too much.

I have heard the bang into gear called a "garage shift" by the tranny guys. People start their cars and immediately go into Reverse to back out of the garage. They don't give the ECM time to lower the idle a little. The ECM also increases the idle speed when you first start the car when it's hot. Wait a little bit and it won't bang so hard. I don't put mine in gear until the RPMs are below 1000.
Another solution is to put in a '88 or newer 700r4. It has an auxiliary throttle body that cushions the shock of going into gear.

,that's was why they upgraded the old 700r4 to the newer 4L60,the bang in gear was partially fixed by the new auxiliary valve body that works with accumulators pistons...another thing about engine speed at idle is that factory idle must be set at 450 rpm...and most of our cars run at 600 -700-800 rpm = bang in D or OD...

Interesting, my car did this when I bought it a couple years ago and continued after the trans was rebuilt. I always thought it was something aftermarket since I have never driven another 700R4.
