Default 85 automatic will not shift into park.

Hello, I'm having an issue with my automatic transmission, it will not shift into park. When I put the shifter in park the transmission does not ingage and remains in reverse. Sometimes it will go into park; and i can turn off the car, but i do not hear or feel it lock the transmission and I can get out and push the car like its in neutral.

So I'm thinking it may be the linkage...any diagrams or specs to help me adjust it?

There is a adjustment right on the lever. Its either the nut came loose or your cable could be going out.

That second pic is obviously not a factory cable or outside lever. Looks like B&M stuff but they do the same thing.
Edit: I just pointed this out so the OP wasnt looking for something he maynot have.

Since I just put a rebuilt 700r4 from an '89 in my car I am dealing with this issue. The cable was VERY hard to get on the stud because it was just a LITTLE too short. There is no adjustment as such. The bracket the shifter end of the cable connects to is welded to the shifter lever. The other end of the cable is held on the bracket with a spring clip. I moved the mounting bracket for the cable as far forward as I could get it. It goes into Park, but just barely.

I've got a new cable arriving on Monday so my next step will be to try to move the lever on the shaft. As I recall, it was a very tight fit, so I don't expect any play there. The only other possibility I see is to move the shifter forward. I took it out to modify it and maybe put it in too far back. Doesn't seem to be much room for movement there, though.

Related to this: the GM cable is long out of stock. The replacement Dorman 16674 is VERY hard to find, but I was able to order one from the Advance Auto Parts web site. I don't know what's going on with this part, as Dorman no longer shows it on their web site.

Does anyone have a picture of a stock C4 shift cable mounting stud/bracket??
This is a F-body bracket and the lower nut will loosen so you can adjust it. If the distance between the bracket mount hole and the cable mount stud are the same for the Vet and Fbody, maybe you could use the fbody part on the vet for some wiggle room???

This is the trans end of the shifter cable that's been on my car since 1985. Soon to be replaced because of the torn boot. Original bracket.

I was wrong about the cable length not being adjustable, as there is a slot on the transmission shift lever (this is my original transmission):
