I was looking into a paxton back in the day i think they make the SN98 or somthing like that but i heard they are junk and you can get them all day cause they fall apart fast? But i know that vortech bought them not to long ago? i would say just pick up a vortech kit or a ATI kit?
The paxtons are not all junk. Thats what 8388 has on his 35th anniv. vette. I ran one for years on my mustang and it performed flawlessly. They are not superior to the Vortech, but are not inferior either.
Althought knowing what I know now I would run a Vortech S trim. Its probably your best bang for the buck super charger out there. And is capable of giving you over 600HP.
The main weakness to the Paxton is that the lubrication is self contained, unlike the Vortech, or the pro charger which uses the engine oil for lubrication. An easy fix, is to add a pump and cooler, this also increases the volume of oil, very important in prolonging the life of the blower, cooler oil temperatures in the blower equals more power and longer life.
In the picture below, you can see the dipstick thats been modified in order for the oil to be picked up and returned after making a trip thru the cooler. Since the cooler install, I've notice that the blower runs much cooler, in the past after a few hard passes you could not physically touch the blower with your hands( way too hot ) , after the cooler install it's no problem at all.
8388,
Whats that black air hose that is blowing on the supercharger for?
Is that some home made cold air?
With the alternator mounted backwards, right behind the radiator, does it get hotter in this location? (causing failure) I know in the stock location being right next to the exhuast does not help, just wondering if a benefit of a supercharger would be longer life of the alt.
Hi Bill. as you know the air intake on the Paxton is located right above the headers, I turned my front air damn into a cool air collector similar to those made for cooling the brakes, and routed that black ribbed hose over the supercharger in order for the air filter to pick up some of that cooler air from infront of the car. As far as the alt. goes, yes it seems to fail more often than the regular location, a reverse fan blade for the Alt. might help, haven't got around to fabricating one yet.
Question for 8388
I too am running a Paxton, and would like to install a cooler for the fluid.
What size/brand cooler are you using, pump, what diameter hose, and dimensions for the fabricated dip stick?
Thanks, email if you wish: fastc4@aol.com
Pictures always help, we have access to machining.
Here's a picture of the cooler and its location. The lines are 3/8" cooler lines the pump is the one that came originally with my kit for the water injection. The cooler is the largest B&M offers model #70266 11"x8"x1.5"
As you can see by the picture I installed it infront the radiator on top of the shroud where the factory put the air filter, I cut out two 3" diameter holes and made some deflectors to guide air to the cooler. As far as fluid goes, just use some B&M trick shift. To make your own dip stick tube can get involved, I recommend you give Paxton a call and just buy one if possible, if thats not possible, let me know and I'll send a detail list of all the parts needed inorder to make one.
