Default Borrowing a snap on scanner, tips?

I am borrowing a snap on scanner from my mechanic to hopefully help in the diagnosis of my drivability problem. I think it is the opti. Anything in particular i should be looking for? Brief summary of problems. Dies on acceleration in between 1000-1500rpm, idle doesnt fall, fluctuating idle (0-600). All of these symptoms are sporadic. Does the scanner state nominal values and when the actual values are out of range? Thanks. i hope to have this thing fixed finally...

If it's like the AutoXray it will catch a snapshot or capture values over a period of time.

Be sure to get some instruction on how to configure it for your car and of course how to use it and recover data, if possible.

The setup for a snap on scanner is relatively easy. It just references off certain characters in your VIN. It only gives nominal values, you have to know what is normal range.
As far as your problem I would check the throttle position sensor (TPS) voltage. It should run from .5 to roughly 5 volts depending on throttle pedal position. (.5 = closed, 5v= wide open) If the voltage strays or doesn't follow linearly with how much the throttle is open, it will cause alot of driveability issues.
