Default TV Cable question

I just put a tran in my 88 and I am having a problem getting this set.

According to the FSM you push the button and the push the cable toward the back of the car. When it is all the way in it says to release the button and move the linkage all the way to the open position. The book says that the cable should ratchet out till it is set.

Mine only comes out about 1/4 inch.

The question is this correct?

I had the pan off today and a friend opened the throttle and I watched to insure the cable was connected. It is. If it is not coming out as far as it is supposed to what do you do to correct it besides a new cable?

Do what you did, only this time see if there is anymore play in the cable by pulling it off while the butterfly is at WOT and pulling it forward. If you have more cable then where the linkage ends, it might be stretched or the wrong cable. Check the ratchet braket for proper function as well. Once I used a round crimp-on electrical terminal and soldered it on after I shortened the cable.

TV cable adjustment is very sensitive. I used this as a guidance, to explain what is going on.
The best way to actually do it is a little more involved and painful (Involves taking pan off and someone to floor the throttle).
But, here is a good link to explain the mechanics behind it. It can screw a transmission up quickly if done wrong.

Since I was just in there last week...

From what I remember (not 100% sure on this part), there was a small gap between the TV lever and TV plunger at idle. The linkage has a spring on it to pull the lever away from the plunger.

The main thing you want to see is that the plunger is fully pushed into the valve body at WOT. As I recall, the end of the plunger was flush with the end of the TV bushing.

The TV valve increases the line pressure so the clutches get clamped tighter when accelerating. If the pressure doesn't go up enough the clutches slip and burn up. Sometimes the TV valve (the one on the right in the pic) gets stuck. There is a modification that puts a solid piece of metal inside the spring so it forces the TV valve to operate.

I stole this image from the TVMadeEZ site to clarify (the colors are the ARROWS, not the parts):

Yesterday I pulled the pan again and while my son moved the throttle watched the valve. At wot the plunger was completely pushed into its seat. I did this to make sure the cable was connected and working.

For some reason when I try to do the adjustment it only moves out about one click and this just doesn't seem to do much.

I guess it is time to take it to the shop and see if they can figure out what is happening.

Thanks all.

It doesnt take much to affect the pressure within the valve body. As long as WOT pushes the TV in all the way, and when off the throttle it is barely off of the plunger, you will be good.

I found a post on another forum that says each click out lowers the shift about 200 RPM. I pushed the button in and manually moved the cable out 4 or 5 clicks and tried driving the car. I may not be set exactly right, but it does appear to be very close. I have not driven it on the highway so I have not been over 30 yet. Will try it later today, but at least it seems that I have found a good starting point.

Not sure why the cable will not pull out when I follow the FSM but I can at least live with what I have for now.

Thanks again.
