Default How to test the overdrive on a 4+3?

Car is a carb-converted 84.

Got the car without the od working. When it was converted to a carb by the dspo, he cut the entire wiring harness.

I re wired into the relay on the firewall with no results.
It's my understanding that the od requires a signal from the engine to let the unit know the car is running, and since my wiring was cut, I dont have that turn on voltage present.

When the car was running, I wired a temporary switch from the positive battery terminal to the pressure switch. Drove in second gear, flipped the switch and nothing.
The engine is in pieces at the moment due to a head gasket.

But I'm going to pull the od pan and see what I can do.

What can I do?

When you pull the pan make sure you have power to the solenoid then to the pressure switch I have seen the connectors fall off.try to find a shop manual it has all the info you need.If power is to the switches then you might have internal trouble inside trans.hope this helps some.

Not as such
but seeing the O/d was previously operated by the computer using speed and engine temp inputs
and that was only active while the engine was running ........

If the O/d is functional ;
a fused wire from a 12V source or a switch to control the O/d relay ( preferred method ) will make it operate fine

With the computer gone will make no difference

so after some time under the car, I found the solenoid does nothing if 12V are applied to it. The pressure switch is good.

where can I find a solenoid?

I have a dn 4+3 on the floor in my garage. Where is the solenoid located.
I saved all my parts when I replaced my transmission with a Keisler 600. If you can show me a picture of it I more than likely have one sitting here that works.

Gone through everything in my garage can't find it. Will go to the shop in the morning and see if it is in the vet somewhere. It is up o the lift. My 4+3 is for sale on EBAY you can see my feet in the picture. Sale ends tomorrow. If I find the part it is yours. http://www.ebay.com/itm/300685092970...S:1123&vxp=mtr

If you have time check with SK speed. I am in California I will let you know by 900 hours if I find it.

I just don't know how you are going to test the trans without the engine running to turn the trans over to build pressure in the od pump,it was a given that the 12 volts direct to the connecter would by pass everthing.
Good Luck

Right, but I did find my solenoid doesn't work at all. At a minimum, that needs to be fixed.
