Default Chasing my Trans Fluid Level

Guys: I am trying to get this level just right. When I bought the car, I checked the level and it was in the range of the hash marked area when cold. I have about 6-700 miles on it since I bought it and the trans seems to function well. Although I have realized that it must have been worked on at some point because the bell housing started to separate from the block causing a clattering noise that I chased down. The heavy clunking noise when going into gear was indeed u-joints that I had replaced. So...it functions well but I cannot seem to keep it at the right level. I pulled some fluid out after a full hot check recently. I got it to where it was exactly right for a room temp check (the next morning). Then, I did another full hot check and it was down between the dimples (too low). So...I added a pint back. Now it reads up past the full hot mark at room temp this morning. It seems to jump around inexplicably on me and I don't know why. No foaming, no leaking, shifts nicely. Any thoughts?

Not sure it matters between model years but the only way I know of to check/verify trans fluid level is with the engine/tranny at operating temp and the engine running at idle-- "room temp" reading doesnt mean anything, except for us humans??????

there should be instructions on the dip stick; typical check is trans at operating temperature engine idle in park.

The level needs to be checked hot at idle. It is also a good idea to let the car idle for a minute or so before checking the level to let things settle down inside the trans.
