Just bought a 1984 corvette and the intrument panel is only visable in daylight or if you shine a flashlight on it. I removed the cover off the intrument panel and checked the the bulbs but none of them appered to be blown, I also checked the fuses and none of them were blown, So I'm kinda stumped here.Anyone have any suggestions?
Mine was the same way when I bought it. The bulbs were all burnt out. The condition you describe is caused by the bulbs not being on for some reason. Did you test them or just do a visual check?
well I took the bulbs out and did a visual check on them and they all looked like brand new bulbs as if someone had recently changed them.Theses bulbs looked like they had never been on before. So I'm thinking its something a little worse than the bulbs,I just don't know what.
my advice replace all the buld
them test the dash. if the problem still there. them you know the bulds is not the problem. and you can get in more complicated repair.
Check resistance on the bulbs before you go out and buy new ones. If they are good, then you need to find out if they are getting power. Also check the ground. Start simple and work backwards.
If the bulbs are good, you may have a bad photocell. If you shine a light on it, and the dash lights get brighter, then the photocell could be the problem. Mine was originally the same way -- very difficult to see at night. I bypassed the photocell so my dash is bright at night.

I just noticed today that when I place a finger over or just block the sunlight from the photocell that my guages start flickering and acting crazy. So this may have something to do with it. thanks
