why is my service engine light comeing on ? i have a 1987 corvette

Generally related to emissions. Could be a vacuum leak, bad o2 sensor, etc. Not familiar enough with the 87 to know specifically what kicks the light on.

There could be as many as 39 reasons the "Service Engine" light has illuminated on your 87. This happens when the computer determines that something is amiss and will send/store a code(s) which will indicate the problem.

Nothing fancy is needed to determine what trouble code the computer has. A simple paper clip will do the job.

How to do it:

Alternatively, you could go buy an expensive "Code Reader" or many AutoZone stores will read the code for you. The Paper Clip method works fine!
