I notice this constant "clickclickcliclick or ticktickticktick" noise under acceleration or at idle with the hood open. Sounds like it comes from the top of the engine, maybe the injectors. The previous owner said it was the exhaust manifold gasket, but I dont buy that. Do injectors click, and why?
Depends on the how the click sounds. If its just idle, its probably injectors. Exhaust leaks are still noticeable when the motor revs. Same for lifters. Get an auto mechanic stethescope if your in doubt. They are pretty cheap.
Do injectors click? Are frogs waterproof? Injectors have a needle valve closed by a spring in them. They also have a coil which is supplied a current pulse by the ECM which opens them to spray gasoline into the intake manifold. The length of the pulse is controlled by the throttle position sensor, more throttle , longer pulse, more fuel , more hp. On your 86 one whole bank (each side) of the injectors are pulsed at the same time which makes for one heck of a CLICK. In later years, GM finally sequenced the injectors, that is , the injector for the next intake stroke only was pulsed. Still clicked, but not as loud as 4 of them opening and closing at the same time.
Yep, gotta love the injector click. Whenever somebody looks at my engine with my hood open they are like, are your valves out of adjustment, and I'm like, nope, that's the injectors.
