Can I change the thermostat without draining the coolant from the engine? I want to change the chip to the performance chip I have and the instructions say I must change to the 160 thermostat. I've changed the chip and started it up and it idles smoothly.
Will it cause any problems running the Vette without changing the theromostat?
Just leave the 198 degree thermostat in place. Unless you are drag racing with cool down periods in between runs you will not see any appreciable performance gains in regular street driving with the 160 degree thermostat.
It wont cause problems it just wont cool the engine as well as it is supose to. They say put in a 160 stat because the fans now come on at 180 degress unlike before when they come on a t 200 something. All you need to do is drain a little collant from your radiator, enough that the level in the rad. is below the level of the hose on the drivers side. Undo the clamp at the thermostat housing and then proceed to change the stat. The fluid will be under a little bit of presure so don't be surprised if you here a soda pop can opening sound from the stat and if a little collant comes out the rad hose(asuming it wasn't lowered enough. This would be a really good time to change the fluid anyways, as summer is here, and you could also clean out the vacume bag (between the rad. and AC condensor) so you car will run cooler to.
All I did was drain out about 1 gallon of coolant. But if you havent serviced your cooling system in some time, this is the perfect time to drain it all out, replace stat, clean and refill. It does help to have a chip programmemed to have the fans come on sooner, or at least a switch to turn the fan(s) on sooner.
I Love this place! Thanks guys for the responses , I planned on changing the coolant and oil in the Vette and Jeep next weekend, now I know I can wait.
