Do remove the cap. The Pan that sits around the filler neck is rubber-like and will slide off the filler neck if you poke one corner down and get some fingers under it.
There are a few hoses that will be almost welded onto the metal tubes by now so figure on cutting them off if needed. Do it right and there will be enough slack to reuse them.
Remove the bolts around the filler tube plate and the filler tube and fuel pump will lift off. Replacement gaskets are available at TLD and the other catalogs.
Duct tape the open hole in the top of the tank while you have the pump out.
when I swap a fuel pump in a C4, I do remove the filler door assembly. It's 4 screws, and removing it gives easier access to the multiple bolts and hoses you need to remove.
I use a pair of chanel-locks to break loose the hoses to avoid cutting them off.
Me too. Just change mine a week ago. Not a hard job. My wife caught me going over all I had done. sHE ASKED "SOMETHING WRONG". i ANSWERED NO IT JUST SEEMED TOO SIMPLE. LOL Go for it.

Me too. It makes it easy to clean around the whole area. Dont want a lot of crap falling in the tank.
