Typical clearance my machine shop sees is 0.020"-0.025".

9.025" is the standard deck height on a small block chevy, which would make the piston 0.025" in the hole like others have mentioned.

Thanks ya all, I'm trying to figure out what thickness gasket to use before the old heads are off, to get the quench where I want it. I truly appreciate all ya alls' replies cuz I want to order the gasket ahead of time if possible.

When I measured the deck height on my '95 engine it was .025"-.026". I wanted to get a .040" quench so I had the block decked .015" and used a .029" head gasket from Mr. Gasket. With a 56.9 cc chamber it gives 10.9:1 compression. You will have to have the manifold surfaces milled also or the manifold won't fit right, it's the same as milling your heads .036"

How about, if the piston to deck is .025 and I just use a Fel-pro 1094 head gasket that's 0.015" thick, and forego all that decking business...

You can do that but better to get the piston a little higher up in the bore so more combustion takes place in the chamber rather than the cyl

I wouldn't trust a head gasket that thin.

I have used an .015 Cometic with no issues on my 406CI w/11:1 CR, make sure your deck and heads are flat

Valid point but you are only changing the cylinder to chamber percentage by 5% so you probably wouldn't notice a difference. By the way, the 1094 is for a normal SB Chevy, not an LT1.

Good spot on that one Jim !! I'm putting iron vortec's on the 350 that's in my '67 pickup, but will also be able to use the discussion when I swap heads on my 93 C4. Got both a set of LT-1 alum. heads and the vortec's side by side on the bench, obviously the vortecs are superior but no surprise given they came later. Got XE250H comp cam, good low end Tq & low overlap so probably high manifold vacuum which is what I want for MPG, its a workhorse farm truck with SM-420 trans, 4:55 axle ratios, yes its a K-20, kinda hard to find seein hows they only made 2,733 of em. I'll try the 0.015 gaskets, if it fks up I guess I'll get out my guitar and drink a couple beers and order a crate motor.
