Does anyone have a definitive, detailed, step by step explanation (without assumptions) about how to solve this apparently wide spread problem? My version of the problem is the same as many others - car runs great from cold start up and continues to run great for as long as I care to run it - until it is turned off. Once it is turned off after reaching operating temperature it will not restart. There is no attempt for the engine to fire no matter how long I crank it over (brand new battery and very clean terminals). There is no smell of gas to indicate flooding. No error messages appear on the dash. After cooling down for several hours it fires right up and again runs fine. Even ran it wide open up through the gears (automatic trans) after restart and it never missed a beat. 66,000 miles on the car. After it does restart there is no smoke out the pipes to indicate flooding. This problem appeared all at once. Car always ran excellent prior to this problem. No recent work performed on engine. Appreciate the help.

There is no smell of gas
So start by finding out what is missing ; fuel or spark?
Crank with a spark plug in a plug wire grounded to block to see if you have good spark
Check for injector pulse while cranking with a noid light.
The ignition control module in the dist that controls spark also sends a ref signal to the ECM that it uses to fire the injectors
Is a unit known to be affected by heat ( when old ) but usually exhibits problems with rough running / spark breaking down once it heats up
