Default Ignition Timing not making sense

So i followed the procedure to time my 86 l98 and with the EST diconected it was timed at 8* BTDC, but when i shut my car off and plugged the EST back in and disconected the battery and restarted it was sitting at about 16*-18* BTDC. I dont know why its doing that what should I do?

That's what its suppose to do......Once you plug the EST back in the ecm takes over your timing again.. Thats why you have to disconnect the est before you start , so your timing isn't influenced by the computer.....WW

16 to 18 degrees at idle is what you are looking for. Move on to the next project.

with WW7 and 383vett. You have set the BASE timing. Once you plug the EST back in, the computer takes over and controls the timing. You are fine.

No, with EST disconnected, it is set at a base timing of 8. When you hook everything up, the car will set the timing thru the computer control. At that point, you need to do nothing as long as its in the 16-18 range as stated.
