Default Rotors and Brake Pads

Hello:

Is it absolutely necessary to replace the pads when you replace the rotors due to possible/probable warping of the front rotors? The pads only have about 5 thousand miles on them. Just want to do the right thing the first time. Thanks

As long as they're not scored or worn, why not re-use them?

Maybe scuff them up with sandpaper to let them wear in...

I saved the ~1K pads off the front of mine when I replaced the rotors...Just in case one of my new GM pads disintegrates...

Anyone ever heard of or purchased any products (like rotors and pads) from a company called Phil's Inc. They also sell Russell braided stainless stell brake lines. They sell a cross drilled or slotted 12" front rotor for $102.44. Thanks

If the pads look good (they are wearing evenly) and are not badly grooved, you should be able to re-use them. Measure the pad thickness at each end of the pad. They sould be very close to the same. Follow the bedding procedure the pads came with and they should be OK. Discard them if they have a wedge shape.

Cross-drilled rotors are not a good idea if you do frequent open track events. These types of rotors will crack under the heat generated by extreme braking. OK for looks and low-speed autocross use.

This would be a good time to do a full fluid flush especially if you are considering stainless lines. I added the Russell lines and they did stiffen the pedal feel quite a bit (don't use the washers that come with the lines, use ones from GM!). I use the Ford ( ) high-performance fluid and do 2 flushes a year. Get a set of speed bleeders to help with the bleeding chore; makes it a 1-person job.

I had the same situation once. What I did was put a new set of pads on to break in the new rotors and saved the old (but still good) pads to use on the next pad job.

I noticed no problems with either the rotors or braking performance after the switch.

Thanks to all for your replies!!! Just got off the phone from ordering the cross-drilled rotors (and pads) to be on the safe side. I don't do any high speed autocrossing/braking anyway. Hope to get it all put together this weekend. :D

Basic rule of thumb:

Break in new rotors with old pads.
Break in new pads on old rotors.
